The total visitor figures to the four sites of the National Museum of Ireland (one of which is in Turlough) for 2011 was 1,096,027, which was not only a 10 per cent increase on 2010 but also the highest figure ever for visits to the museum. However, visitor numbers to the Museum of County Life in Turlough were down slightly on 2010.

Féile na Tuaithe - Turlough Park

It is a huge disappointment to me, and to all staff in the Museum of Country Life at Turlough Park, that Féile na Tuaithe will not be taking place in 2012. When I informed staff here last week that féile would not be going ahead, the sense of shock and disappointment was palpable. As we have been informing our sponsors and principal stakeholders, their response has also been one of shock and concern. The general sense is that this is going to be a very big loss not just to the local community around Turlough and Castlebar but to the wider community in the west of Ireland and beyond.

Events happening in December at the Museum of Country Life, Turlough:

Focus on Christmas customs: find out what life was like 100 years ago and learn about Christmas in the past. Suitable for all ages. Entrance fee is €2 per adult, free for children aged 16 years and under. Group tours at other times can be pre-booked through the museum’s booking office. On Friday December 2 from 11am to 1pm there is a drop-in knitting circle for adults and children aged seven plus.

Christmas Custom tour at the National Museum

You have up until the end of the month to get on board with the Focus on Irish History (1850-1950) daily tour at the Museum of Country Life. Once December kicks in the daily tour will focus on Christmas Customs in the lead-up to the festive season. The tours take place daily at 3pm, from Tuesday to Saturday. The tours cost €2 per person and children under 16 go free. Tours can be pre-booked also.

New hoard of Early Bronze Age gold from Coggalbeg opens at museum

The hoard of Early Bronze Age goldwork which formed part of the contents of a pharmacy safe stolen from Sheehan’s Chemists, Strokestown, Co Roscommon, in March 2009 was officially opened by Jimmy Deenihan, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar, yesterday (Thursday). Safe Secrets: the Story of the Coggalbeg Hoard will be on display until Summer 2012.

Mercedes-Benz club visiting Mayo this Saturday

The roads of Mayo and Galway will see a big increase in the number of Mercs this weekend when the members and friends of the Mercedes-Benz Club will spend Saturday and Sunday (October 1 and 2) enjoying the hospitality and scenic roads of the region.
