The total visitor figures to the four sites of the National Museum of Ireland (one of which is in Turlough) for 2011 was 1,096,027, which was not only a 10 per cent increase on 2010 but also the highest figure ever for visits to the museum. However, visitor numbers to the Museum of County Life in Turlough were down slightly on 2010.

Today is it hard to imagine a world without photographs. They decorate our homes, are on social network sites, in our school textbooks, in our newspapers, in family albums, and kept safe in our wallets and purses. It is hard to belief photography is only 160 years old.

It is a huge disappointment to me, and to all staff in the Museum of Country Life at Turlough Park, that Féile na Tuaithe will not be taking place in 2012. The general sense is that this is going to be a very big loss not just to the local community around Turlough and Castlebar but to the wider community in the west of Ireland and beyond.

Once December kicks in the daily tour will focus on Christmas Customs in the lead-up to the festive season. The tours take place daily at 3pm, from Tuesday to Saturday. The tours cost €2 per person and children under 16 go free. Tours can be pre-booked also.
